In 1810, Madame Clicquot invented the first Vintage Champagne, in 2012 Veuve Clicquot declared the 66th vintage of the Maison. With grapes exclusively from Grands and Premiers Crus, Pinot Noir dominates the blend (51%) and provides the structure that is so typically Clicquot, followed by Chardonnay (34%) that adds finesse and elegance essential in a perfectly balanced wine, and then Meunier (15%) that rounds out the blend. The uniqueness of the Vintage 2012 lies in the addition of 11% of wines aged in large wooden casks (foudres), bringing strength and aromatic intensity. The cask-aged wines act as spices to the blend, bringing very lightly woody, vanilla and toasted aromas.

This French sparkling is sourced from the sandy and gravelly terraces of the Vienne valley, from Seuilly in Chinon and from Reugny in Vouvray. The minerality of Chenin (90%) is complemented by the finesse of Chardonnay (10%). Made using the méthode traditionnelle or champenoise, this blend matured for at least 12 month on the lees after the second fermentation in bottle. The resulting wine offers up a complex nose with accents of citrus and brioche, followed by beautiful subtlety and toasty flavors on the palate, all backed by a nice, balancing acidity.

Odile Delpon inherited the family vineyards, tobacco farm, and saffron plantation in Albas in 1968. She developed the winery with her husband Claude, until their son Didier Pelvillain took over a few decades ago.
There is less wine made now, but the quality is much higher. Yields are much lower and grape selection is important. Soils here are clay and limestone. Didier farms at the highest level of sustainability and biodynamic conversion is in process. Only indigenous yeasts are used. Vines average 32 years old.

Gavoty’s “Grand Classique” combines Grenache and Cinsault in roughly equal proportions, with Carignan playing a minor role which varies based on the vintage’s character. Rather than being pressed immediately after harvest by rote as many Provence rosés are, “Grand Classique”—as well as “Clarendon” below—macerates for several hours before pressing, and the saignée and first-press juice are vinified separately.
