The Prisoner was inspired by the “mixed blacks” first made by the Italian immigrants who originally settled in Napa Valley. The Prisoner is now the most recognized Napa Valley red blend, leading the resurgence of interesting blends by incorporating Zinfandel with the unlikely mix of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Syrah, and Charbono.

The wine is aged on the yeast lees in the bottle for over two years prior to disgorgement. With its vibrant, fruitful and crisp nature, this sparkling wine will maintain its freshness, structure and refined finish for many years, even decades following its initial release.

91 Points Connoisseurs Guide
"A quiet complement of green apple fruit sits beneath similarly constrained elements of toast and minerals in the fresh, nicely composed aromas of this comparatively refined sparkler, and, as is the Schramsberg norm, the wine is charged with plentiful, fairly tiny bubbles that last and last. The clean and crisp, slightly austere qualities of the genre come through at every stop here with nary a hint of sweetness surfacing along the way. Over the years, this producer has shown an especially adept hand with Blanc de Blancs, and nothing has changed with this latest rendition."

"A crisp texture and rather full body carry subtle spice and lean dry fruit flavors in this nicely reserved and complex wine. Apple skin, lemon zest and hints of toasted almond carry the palate and linger on the finish

"Crisp and luscious, with expressive cherry, Meyer lemon and yeast roll accents that linger on a refreshing finish"
Blanc de Noirs (white from black) is the counterpart to Blanc de Blancs (white from white). Made primarily from the red grape Pinot Noir, this is a complex, medium-bodied, brut sparkling wine. Schramsberg pioneered the Blanc de Noirs style in the United States, releasing the first such American sparkler in 1967. The key to producing this complex Blanc de Noirs is our vast and varied focus on diverse cool-climate vineyards. Pinot Noir from Carneros and Anderson Valley combine with fruit from low-yielding Sonoma and Marin coastal vineyards to develop a sparkling wine with a breadth of fruitful aroma and flavor. Select Chardonnay lots give zest and backbone to the blend.

The Oak Knoll wine growing region is prevalent in this wine with its ripe aromatics and juicy acidity. Meaning “hillside” in Portuguese, Encosta is the beginning. This Cabernet was originally created to showcase the youthful vibrancy of the vines planted by our team when the property was first acquired. With time, however, Encosta has become less about younger vines and more about showcasing the various expressions of our highly dynamic vineyard characteristics.
Tasting Notes: Encosta launches with an intense nose of black cherries, Framboise liqueur, and cherry blossoms. The aromatics continue to elevate with fragrant notes of strawberry preserves, violet crumble, orange zest and forest floor. Persistent and exuberant, the silky texture glides across the palate while the mouth-watering acidity builds and carries the brightness and elegance through the lengthy, flourishing finish. Remarkably integrated, the tannins are in attendance without being assertive. Reflective of the vineyard and resplendent growing season, this is a highly finessed wine that will continue to reveal itself with age.
TD-9 is a proprietary blend that celebrates a bold move. In 1973, in the space of a few months, John Shafer went from riding morning commuter trains in Chicago to teaching himself to drive a TD-9 tractor in our Napa Valley vineyard. He’d never grown grapes or made wine in his life. That spirit of risk-taking and adventure still guides Shafer today and inspired the creation of this new wine.

"I was able to taste two barrel samples from 2017, both showing beautifully, that should satisfy anyone who’s concerned about the overall quality of the 2017 vintage. The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Panek Vineyard offers an exotic, perfumed bouquet of blue fruits, violets, and blood orange, and it’s flamboyant and sexy on the palate, with its classic rich yet weightless style. It’s unquestionably a beautiful wine.
From Thomas Rivers Brown on this wine...
Panek Vineyard’s early ripening nature was a blessing in 2017. All 5 blocks we work with achieved full ripeness giving us quite a bit to choose from in this vintage. That coupled with continually improving farming gave us more quantity than we hoped for pre-harvest. We harvest clones 169, 7, 337, 4 and 6 from Panek and in the past there were a few blocks that never were considered for the finished blend. In 2017, we could have put it all in and been extremely happy with the result. Knowing the vintage’s reputation, we choose to be a little more selective and used parts of the 169, 7 and for the first time ever 337. That block continues to make incredible leaps forward producing what looks to be our best block of Panek in 2018. This edition comes across as a mix of everything that preceded it. There’s good red/black/blue fruit sweetness, a nice caramelized brown sugar component, wet stones, violets and smoke. This like the Napa, has a little bit of an old school feel with some savory notes of sage, liquid minerals and roasted meats. It is a difficult vintage to name check but we like the completeness and drinkability of this wine just as we did with the 2011 version, another challenging year where this site shined."
According to many, including David White of The Terroirist Wine Journal, "Thomas Brown is the nation's hottest winemaker." Thomas Brown is one of only a handful of winemakers globally to have received multiple 100-point wine scores (25 to be precise) from penultimate wine critic Robert Parker Jr. of The Wine Advocate, as well as from wine critic luminary, James Laube of The Wine Spectator. In 2010, Thomas was honored as Food & Wine Magazine "Winemaker of the Year."
