The 2017 vintage is beautifully balanced from start to finish. Aromas of black cherry, ripe blackberry and cedar are evident at first swirl. After several minutes of airing, the wine opens up and reveals earthy spices of cedar, mushroom, dried thyme and dried sage. On the palate, the wine is delicious with a silky lushness and tannins that are elegant. Rich flavors of black currant, spiced plum and raspberry come forward with notes of allspice and fine leather. The finish is seamless and well integrated. This wine will age beautifully and develop in the bottle for years to come.

A bottle of Hoopla Rosé solves that summertime dilemma when it’s too hot for red wine but a white would match neither the food nor the mood. Hoopla Rosé is blended from a spectrum of black grapes: 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 6% Zinfandel, 4% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petite Sirah, 2% Syrah. The dark color derives from the winemaking process of bleeding red wine tanks (aka “saignée) soon after the start of maceration in order to add concentration to those wines. The bled off pink juice is then fermented separately in stainless steel tanks and becomes a lovely rosé that can be served well-chilled with a range of fish or lightly grilled meats.

This is our twentieth vintage bottling Heintz Chardonnay and one of the elite vintages for quality and character. We’ve crafted so many memorable wines from these magical vines since I first set foot in the vineyard way back in 1998. The wines are incredibly distinctive, unlike anything else in Sonoma or California as a whole, and that’s down to the special vineyard site itself. High elevation, close to the ocean, long lingering fog influence, late-season ripening, and precise farming combine to give the fruit striking intensity and style. Our 2021 ranks alongside 2002, 2007, 2013 and 2019 as my favorite expressions.

Starts with a nice lush feel to the cassis and plum puree flavors, then steadily picks up grip along the way, with warm cast iron and loam hints running underneath before blossoming through the finish, which pulls in additional singed cedar and savory notes. The crop was small in 2021, with yields off by almost 50%, fewer, smaller clusters and little berries -- but the unusually high skin-to-juice ratio gave us bold with a classic finish. Winemaker Diana Seysses remarks on the density of the '21 Ranch Cabernet, with aromas of crushed black cherries, brambles and plum set off by the velvet tannins and acid structure which so typical of our site. A blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot, the wine was fermented by wild, native yeasts, aged 19 months in French oak barrels and bottled in the spring of 2023. 9,450 bottles were produced.
