When exploring the section of Oliver's Vineyard from which our Sauvignon Blanc vines spring you'll find an interesting and unexplainable patch of rocks, sand and soil composition, unique from the rest of the vineyard. It's as if something magical or otherworldly transported these physical elements and placed them where they don't belong.
Theories about this spot are whispered in dark corners of the winery, ranging from ancient whirlpools to alien intervention. While we may never know why this particular spot is so different from the rest, just like the wine made from the grapes grown there, it's truly something special. “Dum Spiro Spero” – while I breath I hope – is the Snowden family motto which has appeared on every label and every cork since we began producing our own wines 30 years ago. For our 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon, we are using it to mark a unique cuvée from a unique growing year, when winemaker Diana Snowden Seysses combined the Cabernet Sauvignon which would normally have gone into our Brothers and Los Ricos vineyard designates with Cabernet Franc from our Melchior Kemper block. Diana loved the small clusters and small berries of 2020, which resulted in “spectacular concentration. The bouquet is lifted with violets and beeswax. Plum, black cherry, and Bramble lie beneath. On the palate, the wine boasts layers of juicy dark fruit – it is dense and hedonistic.” Fermented with wild, native yeasts, aged 18 months in French oak barrels, 50% new, and bottled unfined in April, 2022. Due to the fires of 2020, it is the only red wine we will be releasing under the Snowden label from the vintage. 11,220 bottles were produced$32.00

A bottle of Hoopla Rosé solves that summertime dilemma when it’s too hot for red wine but a white would match neither the food nor the mood. Hoopla Rosé is blended from a spectrum of black grapes: 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 6% Zinfandel, 4% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petite Sirah, 2% Syrah. The dark color derives from the winemaking process of bleeding red wine tanks (aka “saignée) soon after the start of maceration in order to add concentration to those wines. The bled off pink juice is then fermented separately in stainless steel tanks and becomes a lovely rosé that can be served well-chilled with a range of fish or lightly grilled meats.

Classic example of JONATA’s red, black and green. Cacao, scorched earth and espresso bean. Dark and dusty. Cacao nibs. Chicory coee. Dried figs. Herbal mint and sage. Like the other 2019 reds, this is defined by a feeling that is dark and brooding, but so alluring. Classic merlot nose. Powerful and chalky. So persistent with good density and force. Lifted and toasty. A bit reminiscent of the elegant 2014 in its tightness and structure, but in the end, it is a more powerful and complete blend. A bundle of energy for sure. Still tightly coiled, but ultimately perfectly endowed and balanced.
