"Keeping with the theme of expansion, we added another block of older vines from Larkmead in 2018. Neighboring our original block of Olmo clone is a tiny block of Jenkins clone Cabernet resting in the same Cortina soil. We have always loved this clone of Cabernet having worked with it at Outpost’s True Vineyard and Gemstone Estate. There’s nothing else quite like it in the world of Cabernet. It manages to be both exotic and wildly singular while still coming across as very complete. It has proven to be a very nice complement to what we’ve been working with from Larkmead since 2012. The color here is a bit darker than normal with mostly fruit tones first present on the nose. That familiar muscular walnut husk, roasted nut quality of Larkmead pokes through quickly though placing this wine stylistically in more of a classic era of California wine. Where in the past this wine could be considered the “lightest” of the lineup, the 2018 shows the power of the vintage and a marked improvement from the addition of the new block. The fruit is still purple leaning and the ethereal notes of the past still pop out on palate entry but a weightier middle kicks in almost immediately with notes of sage, graphite, cassis, lavender and a brambly spice note. The tannin starts earlier too adding texture and a dusty, baker’s chocolate note. In the past, I felt this bottling would always need a few years in the cellar to present a complete palate expression. Not so here with the addition of our little Jenkins block. All these additional blending options from all these great sites prove in 2018 that sometimes more is more."

The 2018 growing season in the Russian River Valley was slow and steady, starting off brisk and relatively dry. This cooler weather pattern led to a long flowering period, but fruit set was not impacted and the resulting yields were higher than typical. The methodical pace of the vintage carried through the summer with moderate temperatures allowing for uniform ripening. Harvest was later than recent vintages, pushing into late September—closer to a more classic seasonal pattern. Both the extra time on the vine and the extended harvest window allowed warmer sites to be picked while still fresh and cooler sites to ripen fully. As a result, our 2018 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir has a wonderfully ripe profile with intensity and a generous structure that is complimented by a backbone of freshness and balance. 2018 was a classic Pinot Noir vintage.

This represents the unwavering resolve of the farmers, vintners and winemakers who continue to produce great wine in the face of adversity. It is not a Phoenix, but a Duck rising from the ashes. After all, we are Canard Vineyard. We dedicate this wine to all of those who have been dealt a hardship beyond their control and have emerged stronger. The fruit for this bottling was sourced from the southeast corner of Sonoma County, almost touching the Napa County line. We were awestruck when we had the opportunity to purchase such high-quality old vine Cabernet Sauvignon from a site defined by gravelly loam soils in the shadow of Mount Saint Helena. This wine starts with opulent, mouth-coating, sleek dark fruit. The wine shows off an inky purple hue in the glass with a saturated violet halo. Vivid aromas suggest notes of roasted meat, cigar box, and crushed blueberries. The sumptuous palate expresses notes of currant reduction, cocoa, wild sage and dried black cherry. The plush, round mouthfeel is framed by exotic notes of baking spices and a fine tannin framework. Kith and Kin Chardonnay offers fresh aromas of ripe pear with a floral touch of orange blossom. Stone fruit and Golden apple flavors are balanced with bright notes of lemon zest and a hint of minerality. This medium-bodied Chardonnay has a soft mid-palate with balanced acidity that leads to a nice, long finish.

The crop was small in 2021, with yields off by almost 50%, fewer, smaller clusters and little berries -- but the unusually high skin-to-juice ratio gave us bold with a classic finish. Winemaker Diana Seysses remarks on the density of the '21 Ranch Cabernet, with aromas of crushed black cherries, brambles and plum set off by the velvet tannins and acid structure which so typical of our site. A blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot, the wine was fermented by wild, native yeasts, aged 19 months in French oak barrels and bottled in the spring of 2023. 9,450 bottles were produced.

From our dry farmed estate vines, this full bodied, deep garnet 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is dense and rich with long soft tannins and a smooth integrated structure. Greater concentration of flavor is the result of our old world farming practice of deficit irrigation. Less water and a greater skin to flesh ratio equals more intense fruit on palate.
