Bright violet in the glass. As it’s being poured, the aromatics hit squarely on the nose with a perception of sweetness: pure brambly raspberry juice and blueberry preserves with a hint of white pepper and High Sierra forest floor. Yet, the perceived sweetness on the nose is just that, perceived, and doesn’t carry through to the palate. Lush and enveloping with a beam of acidity, notes of blackberry pie, plum and kirsch flourish. Ultra-round tannins and lingering raspberry, the wine finishes in slow-motion.

Saldo doesn’t fit in, but that doesn’t matter. When you’re from “here and there” (that’s what Saldo means in Latin), you don’t need to form to one, single place. That’s the funny thing about expectations—they’re made to be broken.

ASHES & DIAMONDS’ Mountain Cuvée “Saffron Vineyard” comes from Lisa Chu’s organically farmed Mt. Veeder site, located high above the fog inversion line at an altitude of 1,500 feet, where daytime temperatures are often 15 degrees cooler than on the valley floor. the deep-rooted Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapevines were planted in 2000 in thin soils comprised of uplifted marine sediment and fractured shale. Soils with naturally low fertility and no irrigation make for naturally balanced grapevines with low yields and small berries. Once at the winery, the grapes are cold-soaked until native fermentation begins. The resulting wine is bouncy and outgoing, with explosive red fruit aromas like biting into a ripe, juicy plum, and fine, focused tannins.Sold Out

Stunning magenta and youthful purple hue. The wine's fragrance is perfumed, poised and elegant. The more traditional black cherry and cassis fruit that one find in this wine are complemented by intriguing green olive, cigar leaf, and violet floral components that they find throughout their 2018 vintage wines.
Upon the first sip, the bright and luscious black cherry and plum notes consume the palate. Threaded throughout those fruit components are an inviting combination of cocoa nib and dried rosemary, elevating the wine's complexity and power as the wine builds. While the tannins are persistent and firm, the slate-like texture of this wine offers a smooth and elegant finish. While showing well at the time of release, this wine had plenty of time to develop and age gracefully over the next 15-20 years.
