Much respect to former MLB Champion Joe Blanton’s hands-on approach to his wine label, overseeing every step of the business, but wisely trusting Thomas Rivers-Brown to work his talents into the grapes. The vineyard is located around 1700 feet on Howell Mountain, with the mountain fruit responding extremely well to 18 months in 80% new French oak. Damson plum, blue fruits and vanilla, with a creamy texture you can almost smell. Violets, bitter chocolate, full bodied and capable of being cracked tonight or aging gracefully.
Of all the Domaine’s wines, this is the most forward. It opens up sooner than the others, with a ravishing clarity of expression, uncomplicated and cleanly etched; a caressing softness cloaks a steely skeleton which permits it to evolve with elegance. He is the younger brother of Grands Échézeaux, the glorious elder whose fortune Échézeaux aspires to equal. It sometimes comes very close when it speaks with the muscular language of the conquistadors. Surface area: 4.6737 hectares.
